Founded in February 2013, the Port Jefferson Photography Club is a group of friends with a common love for photography who gather together to learn, express ourselves through our work and grow as photographers. Everyone regardless of skill level or camera type is welcome.
We not only show our work but we learn from seeing the work of others. Our members have had their photographs displayed and sold in a variety of galleries and other venues such as Gallery North, the Port Jefferson village center, Pasta Pasta, various libraries, and the club won the 2019 St. James Art Walk.
Through our critiquing we are exposed to many techniques, points of view and artistic expressions that inspire us to go out and create good images. We do so with respect, confidence and appreciation for each other's efforts. We are able to seek mentoring and ask questions knowing that we can learn from each other. We go on monthly field trips to shoot and share with each other without fear of ridicule or embarrassment for being beginners which also fosters friendship among our members.
Critique is not criticism! Criticism is all about putting someone else's efforts down. Critiquing is not about that. It is about helping each other get better by sharing information and ideas with one another that we may not have thought about such as; shooting from a different angle, shooting from numerous angles (working the scene), lighting nuances, exposure techniques, image cropping, etc. When what you garner from these critiques becomes part of your photographic arsenal your photographic skills will evolve substantially.
Being a member of the Port Jefferson Photography club is a great way to learn techniques .Don't be afraid to ask people if you want or need to know something. It's a great way to see other people's work and ask questions about how they got their results. Most club photographers are more than happy to share their knowledge. Presentations/educational lessons are also given by special guests or member speakers. Workshops allow us to learn and use those techniques in the future.
Like anything we want to learn to do, in order to get better we practice. We make mistakes and learn from them. Lots of mistakes, lots of learning. It took a lot of stepping out and falling before we could walk. So it is with photography! You will make many mistakes but if you learn from them you will get better and better at your craft.
Our focus is on education in an enjoyable environment with mentoring for those in the beginning stages of their photography journey.
